Our local Hesperia/Apple Valley and Barstow/Twentynine Palms, Victorville teams are leaders in storm damage restoration services. Victorville experiences a high desert climate with distinct weather patterns throughout the year. Several types of storms can affect the area:

Winter Storms: Victorville encounters winter storms, typically bringing colder temperatures, rain, and sometimes snow to the region. Snowfall can accumulate in the higher elevations of the nearby San Gabriel and San Bernardino Mountains.

Summer Thunderstorms: During the summer months, Victorville can experience monsoonal moisture from the south, leading to the development of thunderstorms. These storms often bring heavy rain, lightning, gusty winds, and the potential for flash flooding in low-lying areas.

Santa Ana Winds: Victorville is also susceptible to Santa Ana winds, which are strong, dry winds that originate in the desert and blow toward the coast.

High Wind Events: The region can also experience high wind events at various times of the year, which may be associated with passing weather systems or localized wind patterns.

Heatwaves: While not storms in the traditional sense, Victorville can endure intense heatwaves during the summer, with temperatures soaring well above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Residents of Victorville need to stay informed about weather conditions, especially during the summer thunderstorm season, and to be prepared for temperature extremes, high winds, and occasional winter storms, depending on the season.

Poor Drainage Around Hesperia Home Cause of Stormwater Intrusion?

12/27/2023 (Permalink)

Water pools on the ground during a rain storm. We are leaders in storm damage restoration services in San Bernardino County.

Our local Hesperia/Apple Valley and Barstow/Twentynine Palms, Victorville teams respond to storm damage emergencies every winter in Hesperia. One common cause of water intrusion comes from improper grading and slope around a home. The recommended slope away from a home is between 2 percent and 5 percent. Here are some tips for preventing water from pooling around the foundation of your home:

Positive Drainage: The primary goal of grading is to ensure positive drainage, meaning that water should flow away from your home rather than toward it. Proper slope and grading around your home help channel rainwater and surface runoff away from the foundation.

Building Codes and Local Regulations: Be sure to consult your local building codes and regulations for specific requirements related to grading and drainage. Local guidelines may vary depending on your location, climate, and soil conditions.

Grading Materials: When regrading or landscaping around your home, use appropriate materials like compacted soil, gravel, or other well-draining materials to create the desired slope. Avoid materials that hold water, such as clay soil.

Professional Assistance: If you're uncertain about the grading around your home or experience water intrusion issues, it's a good idea to consult with a professional landscaper, architect, or civil engineer. They can assess your property and recommend appropriate solutions.

Barstow Home Damaged by Powerful Storm?

11/27/2023 (Permalink)

Dark storm clouds fill the sky before a storm. We are leaders in storm damage restoration services in San Bernardino County.

Our local Hesperia/Apple Valley and Barstow/Twentynine Palms, Victorville teams are leaders in storm damage restoration services in Barstow. After a storm has passed, it's essential to conduct a thorough inspection of your home to identify any damage that may have occurred. Storms can cause various types of damage, including roof damage, siding damage, broken windows, and structural issues. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to inspect your home for storm damage:

Safety First: Before you start the inspection, prioritize safety. Ensure the storm has passed and there are no immediate safety hazards, such as downed power lines or unstable structures. If you suspect structural damage to your home, exercise extreme caution and consider contacting a professional for help.

Exterior Inspection: Walk around the exterior of your home and carefully examine each side. Look for signs of damage, such as loose or missing shingles or roof tiles, damaged or displaced siding, dented gutters, and downed tree limbs. Check for broken or cracked windows, especially if exposed to wind.

Roof Inspection: If it is safe to do so and you can access a ladder, inspect your roof for damage. Check for missing or damaged roofing materials, including shingles, tiles, or metal panels. Look for any signs of water leaks or water damage in the attic or ceiling.

Gutter Inspection: Examine your gutters and downspouts for debris or damage. Clogged gutters can lead to water damage and further problems.

Chimney and Vents: Inspect your chimney and any vent openings (e.g., dryer vents, exhaust vents) for damage or blockages.

Fencing and Outdoor Structures: Check your fencing, sheds, and other outdoor structures for damage. Assess the condition of gates, posts, and any structural components.

Trees and Landscape: Examine trees on your property for damage, including broken branches or uprooted trees. Remove any fallen branches or debris that may pose a hazard.

Interior Inspection: Inspect ceilings and walls inside your home for signs of water leaks or damage. Check windows and doors for drafts or damage that may have occurred during the storm.

Utilities: Check your electrical, gas, and water systems for visible damage or leaks. If you suspect a gas leak, immediately leave the premises and contact your utility company.

Documentation: Take photos or videos of any damage you find. This documentation can be valuable when filing insurance claims. Keep a detailed record of the date and time of the inspection.

Insurance Claims: If you discover significant damage, contact your homeowner's insurance company as soon as possible to report the damage and initiate the claims process. Provide them with the documentation and photos you have taken.

Remember that safety should be your top priority. If you are unsure about the safety of any part of the inspection or if you suspect structural damage, it's best to consult with professionals before proceeding with repairs.

September is National Preparedness Month

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) promotes disaster and emergency preparedness education each September to increase awareness about the potential risks and hazards that can affect our lives. The campaign aims to empower individuals and communities to become proactive in mitigating the impacts of disasters.

This year’s focus is on older adults and ensuring they have the community support and access to services and medications they need in the aftermath of a disaster. By fostering a sense of shared responsibility and preparedness, communities can effectively respond to disasters, reduce panic, and provide assistance to those in need.

Raising awareness about preparedness and the special needs of vulnerable populations, like the elderly, contributes to the overall resilience of our community and the nation. When individuals and communities are prepared, they become better equipped to handle emergencies, which reduces the burden on first responders and emergency services. This allows these organizations to focus their resources on the most critical areas and provide assistance to those who need it the most.

A Window Breaks During A Powerful Wind Gust in Hesperia?

8/29/2023 (Permalink)

A broken window is shown. We restore wind damage 24 hours a day in San Bernardino County.

I couldn’t believe my eyes! A small dirt devil came down the street into my front yard on a windy day and sent landscaping gravel and small twigs flying through the air, breaking my window and damaging my home’s landscape plants. I couldn’t believe how powerful that tiny tornado was! It only lasted about thirty seconds, but was able to cause damage nevertheless. My neighbor told me to call the local Hesperia/Apple Valley and Barstow/Twentynine Palms, Victorville team and I’m glad I did.

The team arrived quickly and immediately inspected and assessed the damage. They contacted my insurance adjuster and immediately began the cleanup and restoration process. They boarded up the broken window and came back to replace it later that day. Now, you would never know there had been any wind damage!

Winds can turn anything not tied down into flying projectiles, causing property damage. The Federal Emergency Management Agency suggests replacing gravel landscaping materials with softer materials because rock and gravel materials can cause serious damage during a severe wind event. Gravel has been found in mailboxes during very strong wind events and has even shredded vinyl siding.

Mojave River Flood Closes Rock Springs Road Near Hesperia?

6/27/2023 (Permalink)

A river is shown during a flash flood. We respond to flooding emergencies 24 hours a day in San Bernardino County.

A few months ago, nature unleashed a series of atmospheric rivers that caused the Mojave River to crest its banks, washing over Rock Springs Road in Hesperia, and flooding homes in other low-lying areas of San Bernardino County.

When you need emergency assistance with a flooding emergency, our local Hesperia/Apple Valley and Barstow/Twentynine Palms, Victorville teams are ready to respond and typically arrive on-site within four hours of your call. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), urges people to be aware of the signs and clues that indicate an impending flash flood.

Series of Thunderstorms

Listen to local weather forecasting thunderstorms. When thunderstorms come through a region in a series, the rain they produce can saturate the ground and leave no place for the water to drain, causing flash flooding events.

Roaring Sounds

Sometimes you can hear a roaring sound before you see the flash flood. Look for rapidly rising water in streams and riverbeds. The water may also turn a muddy color. If you hear or see any of these conditions, head for higher ground immediately to avoid being swept away by the rising water.

Dust Storm Blows Through Victorville?

6/20/2023 (Permalink)

A dust storm is shown. We respond to wind damage emergencies 24 hours a day in San Bernardino County.

In 2019, a large dust storm moved through Victorville, obscuring visibility and leaving a wake of dust.  Dust storms can happen anywhere in the United States, but they are more common in the Southwest. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), dust storms occur due to thunderstorm outflow winds, and these strong winds can start a dust storm that can drastically reduce visibility.

Our local Hesperia/Apple Valley and Barstow/Twentynine Palms, Victorville teams offer these tips from the NWS for staying safe while during a dust storm:

  • If dense dust is observed blowing across or approaching a roadway, pull your vehicle off the pavement as far as possible, stop, turn off lights, set the emergency brake, take your foot off of the brake pedal to be sure the tail lights are not illuminated.
  • Don’t enter the dust storm area if you can avoid it
  • If you can’t pull off the roadway, proceed at a speed suitable for visibility, turn on lights, and sound the horn occasionally. Use the painted center line to help guide you. Look for a safe place to pull off the roadway.
  • Never stop on the traveled portion of the roadway

Damaged Rain Gutters Cause of Roof Leaks in Hesperia Home?

6/13/2023 (Permalink)

Rain falls outside a window during a summer storm. We restore storm damage 24 hours a day in San Bernardino County.

Our local Hesperia/Apple Valley and Barstow/Twentynine Palms, Victorville teams respond to storm damage emergencies every year. Although it seldom rains in June in Hesperia, it is always good to inspect your home and seal any gaps and cracks around windows, doors, and foundations.

After any rainfall, it is a good idea to inspect rain gutters and attic spaces for water damage and make repairs right away. Here are some tips from home expert Bob Villa for determining if your rain gutters are damaged:

Inspect your rain gutters for visible signs of cracking. Use binoculars to inspect for smaller cracks. If you see extensive cracking, replacement is required.

Inspect gutter seams for damage where two horizontal sections meet.

Inspect your home’s paint job. If there is evidence of paint peeling, it may point to rain gutter failure. Check the section of the rain gutter closest to the paint damage for leaks. If there are more than a couple of leaks, you may want to replace the rain gutters.

Inspect your home’s exterior wood elements for rotting windowsills or door jambs. You may have clogged rain gutters or inadequate storm drainage.

Inspect the exterior of the home for mildew damage. If there is moisture accumulating around or near the foundation, mildew can grow. This is a sign your rain gutters are not working properly.

Lightning can also strike people inside of homes. Here are some lightning safety tips for staying safe indoors during a lightning strike from the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

Being indoors does not automatically protect you from lightning. In fact, about one-third of lightning-strike injuries occur indoors. Here are some tips to keep safe and reduce your risk of being struck by lightning while indoors.

  • Avoid contact with water during a thunderstorm. Do NOT bathe, shower, wash dishes, or have any other contact with water during a thunderstorm. Lightning can travel through plumbing.
  • Avoid using electronic equipment of all types. Do NOT use anything connected to an electrical outlet, such as computers, laptops, game systems, washers, dryers, or stoves. Lightning can travel through electrical systems and radio and television reception systems.
  • Avoid using corded phones. Corded phones are NOT safe to use during a thunderstorm. However, cordless or cellular phones are safe to use during a storm.

How Can I Keep My Pipes From Freezing in Hesperia?

1/3/2023 (Permalink)

A faucet is left dripping to prevent frozen pipes. We restore storm damage 24 hours a day in San Bernardino County.

Our local teams in Hesperia/Apple Valley and Barstow/Twentynine Palms respond to storm damage emergencies every year. Winter temperatures can drop below freezing in Hesperia, and if they remain below freezing for more than one day, the chances of having a frozen or burst pipe increase. Here are some tips for preventing frozen pipes from the American Red Cross:

How to Prevent Frozen Pipes
  • Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.
  • When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe, even at a trickle, helps prevent pipes from freezing.
  • Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature during the day and night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.
  • If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, and set it to a temperature no lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

Tips for Calming Your Pet During a Severe Storm in China Lake?

11/29/2022 (Permalink)

A person covers his dog's ears so he can't hear loud storm noise outside. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day in San Bernardino County.

Our teams in Hesperia/Apple Valley and Barstow/Twentynine Palms have been restoring storm damage in China Lake for many years. Some pets get very anxious during severe weather. Here are some tips from the American Kennel Club for calming your pets during bad weather:

1. Give Them a Safe Space

The best thing you can do for your dog is to let them go to their safe space and not punish them for any behavior during thunderstorms, including destruction and whining. They will feel less stressed if they're in an enclosed, familiar area where they feel comfortable.

2. Provide Background Noise

They'll be less stressed if your dog can't hear the thunder or see the lighting. In addition to providing a safe space that's dark and covered, provide background noise to reduce stimulation. Like humans, dogs feel uneasy when they unexpectedly hear a loud sound, and having background noise helps. Soothingly talking to your dog, and if your dog likes it, pet them with long, calming strokes.

3. Soothe Your Dog with Toys, Treats, and More

Chewing and puzzle toys can also help your dog during a thunderstorm. If your dog is a chewer, buy a toy like "Lickimats," designed to make the dog work to get the food off. In addition, kongs filled with peanut butter or kibbles and anxiety vests are helpful.

Prepare for Storm

9/1/2022 (Permalink)

Storms can be a real menace for many homes or property owners. No one wants to risk their property or lose valuable items during a storm. So preparing and putting measures in place to protect your property is the only way to avoid any damage or putting your family at risk.

Such preparations may include: trimming trees, securing your items, and repairing roof damage are some simple maintenance items you can use to prepare for a storm. If you are hit with water damage from a storm, make sure to reach out to SERVPRO so we can help make it "Like it never even happened". We have the tools and experience necessary to help get you back into your home or business safely and quickly.

Trim those Trees

9/1/2022 (Permalink)

Safety is a top priority for any home or property owner. When a storm is brewing and you have trees near your home or business, they can become a hazard. Trees and branches can fall on your home or property when a storm with heavy rain and/or wind hits.  One of the maintenance things you can do  to make sure your trees are not hazards during storm activity is to contact an experienced arborist who can assess your trees. Best practice would be to enlisted a qualified arborist to inspect your trees every 2-3 years for advice on the best preventive measures.

One of the significant causes of tree failure is root damage. When performing work around your home or business, be careful when digging or excavating around trees, damage to the root system can happen during this process.

Storms in the Southeast

6/5/2022 (Permalink)

Every year it seems storm season comes earlier and earlier. Here we are just beginning June and the first tropical storm was trying to make an appearance in South Florida.

Even though this storm did not come to a full Tropical Storm or Hurricane, the onslaught of rain still has the potential to cause some serious damage. Rain to this magnitude can come in sideways, torrential downpour, steady soaking, etc. Any one of these types of rain can get into your home or business and quickly start affecting your flooring, cabinetry, drywall, furnishings, etc.

When you are affected by these types of natural disaster events, remember to call SERVPRO. We specialize in handling these types of damages to your structures and return your home or business to preloss conditions as quickly as possible.

Dangers of a House Flood

1/4/2022 (Permalink)

When a person's house floods, their mind is typically focused on the visible damage caused by the water, which makes sense.

But, there are many invisible dangers that a house flood can bring to a property owner when they return.

During a house flood, it's important for the owner to contact a clean-up and restoration organization as soon as possible, like SERVPRO, to quickly mitigate all dangers presented to those living in the property.

Some of the biggest dangers following a house flood that we don't often think of include electrocution, mold, and even deadly infections.

If a flooded property's electrical outlets, cords, or appliances have been covered in water at any point, the water could be energized, and you are at risk of electrocution.

Anytime water sits in a home, especially for longer than 24-48 hours, mold WILL begin to grow inside the property.

Another significant danger of a house flood includes harmful bacteria in the water, which can cause an infection like tetanus, diphtheria, or pertussis.

A flood in your property is no small deal; homeowners must understand all the dangers and seek professional help right away; call SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley or SERVPR of Barstow/Twentynine Palms at 760-244-2566, for the safety of yourself and your family.

Fire Season Already?

7/14/2021 (Permalink)

Fire Season seems to come earlier every year. With that comes the need to remind people how they can be proactive in protecting the families, homes and businesses from some potential hazards. At SERVPRO we work closely with home owners and business owners along with their insurance carriers when they experience a loss due to fire, so we reached out to one of those Insurance Carriers to get some tips that they would give their policy holders.

Helpful Tips from State Farm:

  • Protect your family, home or business with smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors and make sure they are properly installed according to manufacturers directions. If you use battery operated units, check those batteries at least monthly by testing the unit for functionality. If it doesn’t sound an alarm, replace the batteries immediately.
  • Have a fire extinguisher handy and remember the key word “PASS”. Pull the trigger to release the locking mechanism, Aim the nozzle low and at the base of the fire, Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly, Sweep the nozzle side to side to extinguish the fire.
  • Review your home for potential fire hazards:
    • Check electrical cords for fraying
    • Review extension cords – avoid “octopus plugs” or using multiple extensions cords plugged into on another
    • Examine light switches for buzzing or sparking – replace if either of these things are happening.
    • Review light bulbs – do not use higher wattage bulbs than the device calls for.
    • Examine clothes dryer – keep it clean and free of lint.
    • Glassware can create a concentrated ray that cold ignite paper or wood.
    • Loose batters if they connect with other forms of metal can create an electrical charge that could cause a spark.
    • Electric blankets – keep them flat while using and make sure they are certified.
  • Practice Fire Safety
    • Talk to your family about fire safety
    • Have a plan to get out of a room or your home if a fire occurs
    • Agree on a meeting place to make sure everyone is out safely
    • Practice your plan at least annually.

Hopefully these tips will help you or at the very least spark the conversation with your family. If a fire damage occurs, SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms is here to help.

Rain, Rain, Rain

7/14/2021 (Permalink)

Rain, now that is not a word you hear used a lot in Southern California. It is however a word we would all love to hear right now. Fire season is upon us right now and everyone is focused on those type of events but let’s not forget about how a heavy rainfall can also create massive problems for our homes and businesses.

Flashfloods can come out of nowhere when we do get the occasional monsoon type weather in our desert areas. We have all seen the news reports when an event like this happens, cars/trucks stuck in waist high water with their owners being rescued; mud, trees and debris flowing down a street and into people’s homes devastating their lives; high volumes of water rushing down a city street seeping into businesses and parking garages causing thousands of dollars in damages. Water, mud and debris from a flashflood does not discriminate. These events can bring massive amounts of water, mud or debris into your home, business or car and who can help clean it up – SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms.

SERVPRO is a trusted leader in the industry bringing with them over 50 years of experience in the fire and water damage restoration industry with over 1,400 franchises across North America, SERVPRO is amongst the premier companies in our respective fields.

Don’t give fire fuel to burn

4/21/2021 (Permalink)

Spring is here and with it, warmer temperatures. Californians are no stranger to fire season and even though we still have some rainy days ahead, summer is right around the corner.

Every year, SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms get a ton of calls for wildfire or smoke damage. Nay a year goes by that a major fire doesn’t break out somewhere in southern California near a populated area. 2018 taught the state a valuable lesson when it comes to fire safety and preparation and since then, the state has been far more vigilant with its resources. Firefighters were overworked due to the sheer amount and respective sizes of the Carr and Holy fires, as well as the numerous other fires that broke out that year.

How can you as an individual minimize your risk for fire damage? There are a few simple (and free) steps you can take.

  1. Maintain rain gutters and other areas where leaves and other vegetation gather. This is to reduce the likelihood of embers or flames jumping to roofs or yards where a fuel source is present.
  2. Fully extinguish cigarettes and other flammable debris before discarding. It is not only dangerous to throw cigarette butts on the ground; it’s illegal.
  3. Call SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley or SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms if all else fails and your home or business experience fire damage. With over 50 years of experience in fire damage restoration, we are your go-to resource 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Fire safety is no joke and we can all do our part to help reduce the risk of damage!

Snow is beautiful until it becomes dangerous

4/21/2021 (Permalink)

With the polar vortex in Texas raging and utilities being unavailable for the foreseeable future, people in the Southwest are currently living in perpetual freezing darkness.  Windmills are frozen and the electrical grid is being pushed to its brink, laying a heavy burden on fossil fuels to try and thaw the freeze.

In the 1990’s, Californians experienced storms that knocked out electricity for long stretches of time. While these were hard on the grid, electricity was always restored in a timely manner. Sometimes it took longer, but it always came back within a day or two. We were luckily spared from this blizzard-like weather, but for how long?

When will southern California experience a deep freeze?

The high desert regions are no strangers to light snowfall, typically getting a little less than a foot annually. What happens when the snow is waist high and people are stuck in their homes?  SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms want to offer you some quick tips in the event of this hypothetical situation coming true.

  • Have a plan. If a violent storm separates you from your family, what are you going to do? Where will you meet up?
  • Have an emergency preparedness kit. This may include flashlights, a lighter, spare batteries, and canned food.
  • Stay tuned in to local radio. While the world is reliant on television and wifi-enabled computers, these things will not be reliable if the power goes out. Be sure to keep a battery-powered radio handy in case of such an event.

Most importantly, if your home or business is damaged during a storm similar to the one I described, be sure to make SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms your priority phone call. With 50 + years of experience in storm damage restoration, our technicians have the skills and training to return your home or business to preloss conditions.

The Winter of '21

1/6/2021 (Permalink)

2020 has come to an end. That means a lot of different things to a lot of different people, but one thing rings true for everyone: winter is definitely here. The mornings are cold, the nights are long, and the overcast skies make from some brilliant, beautiful sunsets. While a lot of people prefer the cold and rainy landscapes of winter in southern California, they bring with them a slew of issues that both home and business owners should take into consideration.

Ice? In California? Not likely, right? Wrong. With ever-changing atmospheric conditions, California has experienced its share of frozen pipes and icy roads. While it is uncommon in the Inland Empire, the higher elevation areas such as the mountains and high desert will know this struggle all too well. Long story short, frozen pipes are prone to bursting. When this happens, a flooded home or business is sure to follow if the proper steps aren’t taken swiftly.

While 2021 may hold brighter horizons in many regards, the winter months are still sure to bring rain and wind. While we do technically live in a desert, believe me when I say that just because your home hasn’t experienced the wrath of a flash flood in the past doesn’t mean it won’t this year.

You may notice a pattern forming here. Yes, it’s uncommon. Does that mean it is impossible for your home or business to experience a water loss? No way.

If you are unfortunate enough to find your property under water, SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms is here to help. Give us a call today to learn more.

Flooded

12/28/2020 (Permalink)

One of the benefits of owning a home in the high desert (at least opposed to living on the coast) is that you never have to worry about your home being invaded by gushing torrents of water in the event of a storm. Unless, of course, it rains. Flash floods are one of the most common causes of major water damage in the desert and more than just the roads are affected.

Regardless of the amount of sandbags and preparation, water has an annoying tendency to find its way into homes and cause major damage. Though this year has been relatively dry so far, that doesn’t mean we’re not in for a wet winter / spring like 2019. If you end up pulling the proverbial short straw and find your home under six inches of water, make sure you have SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley or SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms’ number saved (760-244-2566). With over 50 years in the restoration and water mitigation industries, we can help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Windy, Windy

7/30/2020 (Permalink)

Blowing trees Looks a Little Windy out There

Southern California doesn’t get tornadoes all that often. When you ask a resident of America’s “tornado alley” area if they would rather live here or stay where they are, nine times out of ten they will stay put, denouncing California for its earthquakes. Ask a Californian and most of the time you will get the same response, but in favor of California due to the Midwest’s propensity for tornadoes.

The real conundrum is that even though California doesn’t get tornadoes all that often, we absolutely get devastating winds in many areas. Take Hesperia, for example. In November of 2019, Hesperia experienced high winds that toppled street signs and mailboxes, amongst other things. This type of wind is fairly common, especially in the more open, valley areas.

While high winds are not as visibly disturbing as a giant funnel cloud shaping itself into an atmospheric vacuum monster set on destroying property, the effects can be much the same. Winds have been known to hurl debris through windows and roof tiles or shingles, leaving homeowners to foot the bill.

With all of this being said, I also offer you good news. Regardless of what type of wind Mother Nature throws at you, SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms is here to make sure that you don’t have to deal with it alone. Our trained professionals go to great lengths to make sure your home is restored to preloss conditions and we do so with integrity and compassion.

If your home or business has been damaged by wind, give our office a call today at (760)244-2566.

Rain Storms

7/30/2020 (Permalink)

Standing water on tile floor Heavy rains can cause flooding in your home.

Every once in a great while, southern California experiences a major storm. I don’t mean loud thunder and impressive displays of lightning. I’m talking more specifically about rain storms. Storms that carry large amounts of precipitation have the capacity to be considerably damaging to suburban areas, and even more so to rural neighborhoods and roadways.

The high desert receives a decent amount of rain annually, but once in a while we experience rains that incapacitate our ability to freely travel back roads. The winter of 2019/2020 brought with it not only above-average amounts of rain, but also an extended period of such weather. It rained well into May and June, leaving many roads under water and impassable.

Storm waters like this also have a nasty tendency to make their ways into homes. SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms responded to multiple water losses that were a direct result of rain water coming in through the roof or from the ground. These types of floods often happen quickly and can catch homeowners off-guard.

Our trained water technicians are trained experts in flood damage dry-outs and restoration and with over 1,700 franchises nationwide to pull from, no job is too big.

Aside from the more common residential floods we contend with, SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms also responds to commercial floods frequently. While they are typically a larger undertaking, we have yet to come across something we couldn’t handle.

If you have experienced a flood in your home or business, give us a call today at (760)548-3191. We can make it “Like it never even happened.”

Flood Water

7/22/2020 (Permalink)

Floods are dangerous. This is no secret to anyone who has been in heavy rains. In the high desert communities torrential downpour can quickly lead to flash floods, making for hazardous road conditions and greatly increasing the risk of both road wash-outs and hydroplane situations. The flood water is bad enough but when it sits, it can become even more of an issue.

Residential or commercial flood water has three classifications.

Category 1 – this water is considered to be “clean” water. Category 1, or Cat 1, floods are typically the result of a burst water line in a home. This can include supply line water from toilets, dishwashers, sinks, and water heaters. Cat 1 water poses no real biological risk.

Category 2 – this type of water loss is considered “mildly contaminated”. Examples of this type include water that contains soap or some other type of non-biological additive to it. It is considered mostly safe.

Category 3 – this type of water is considered “grossly contaminated”. This water can be dangerous.

When your home is flooded by storm water, it can quickly become Cat 3 and pose risks to your health and safety. To prevent this from happening, SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms is here to help 24 hours a day to ensure we can quickly and efficiently dry out and clean up any flood damage before it progresses into something more serious.

If you have experienced a flood or any other type of water damage, give us a call at (760)244-2566.

Storm Damage can be Devastating

4/28/2020 (Permalink)

downed trees in peoples yards The Aftermath of a Storm

Storms in Southern California very seldom reach the severity of being able to cause significant damage to your home. However, there are exceptions to every rule. If your home suffers damage, calling a storm damage / restoration company should be on the short list of immediate actions you should take. Prior to that, there are a few things you as a homeowner can do to help the process along.

Be safe

The first thing you are likely to consider or worry about after a storm event is the state of your home. Homes, however, are material and can be replaced. Your family and pets cannot.

While inspecting your property, look out for hazardous debris, such as nails and sharp, broken edges that may cause injury. If there’s water present, do not turn on anything that requires electricity to use.

If a tree or telephone pole has fallen on your home, stay outside. Heavy objects can leave property structurally unsound.

Survey the area

If you can do so safely, assess the damaged area(s) in your home. Start from the top down. A compromised roof may collapse, causing severe injury or death.

Look for things like water stains or exposed openings in the walls or ceiling. These are typical in severe storms and are easy to miss if you don’t know what you are looking for.

Be sure to document all damage with pictures or videos. This will be extremely beneficial to have later, once you contact your home insurance company.

If necessary, tarp the roof

We cannot stress safety enough but if a storm continues to pelt your home with winds, rain, or snow, you may find yourself in a situation that requires you to tarp your own roof. Here are some tips:

  • Before starting, clear the area of any branches or debris.
  • The ideal tarp will be thick and heavy, as well as 4 feet bigger than the affected area.
  • Nail the tarp to a 2×4, wrap it around the board, and then screw the board to the roof. This board serves as the “anchor board”.
  • Attach more 2×4 boards to the roof perpendicular to the anchor board. When you screw the boards in, they should first go through the board, tarp, then roof.
  • Finish by attaching the extra parts of the tarp to the eaves of the roof, securing it firmly in place.

Call the experts

SERVPRO of Hesperia / Apple Valley / Barstow / Twentynine Palms is comprised of trained professionals that are ready to help restore your home to pre-loss condition. We are available 24/7, 365 days a year.

Rest assured. We will make it “Like it never even happened.”

Prepare for the Storm

4/14/2020 (Permalink)

California has one of the strangest and sporadic climates in all of the United States. We don’t have what people would consider “real weather”, save for a month or two out of the year. However, we do get some pretty intense surges from Mother Nature once in a while. Thunderstorms can come out of nowhere and produce some major flood water situations. A heavy rainstorm can produce significant water and wind damage that can affect the productivity and safety of your business. Even before a watch notifies you of a potential storm or a warning alerts you of immediate danger, be sure to have prepared your company with these seven steps.

  • Steps to prepare your business for storms
  • Have a system for alerts

Find out how you can best receive notifications in Chino, CA. Often, there are email alerts to which you can subscribe so that you can easily communicate with your employees.

  • Plan for a safe room

Ideally, identify an interior room without windows within your place of business. Clearly mark this room with a sign and train all staff members for emergency preparedness.

  • Assign a staff member

This person can be responsible for gathering any items that are outside in preparation for a storm. Having a list of items to collect is ideal to ensure timely preparation.

  • Regularly inspect trees and shrubbery

Limbs surrounding your building pose a risk during a storm. Removing dead limbs can reduce the risk of damage caused by high winds.

  • Implement a schedule for inspecting the roof

This will help to ensure that it is structurally sound. After a rainstorm, be sure to check that rain spouts and drainage systems are working properly.

  • Consider the need for lightning rods

These can be vital to further protect your place of business. Lightning rods redirect the electricity and can be helpful even in a steel building. Consult your local fire company for advice on placement.

  • Be prepared to respond to flood damage

Have a reputable company in mind to call immediately in case water damage is sustained in a heavy storm.

Thunderstorms can be an underestimated source of property damage as well as a tremendous safety risk for your business. Even a substantial rainstorm can cause lasting damage. With the proper preparations, your company can be ready.

Storm Events

Much like its residents, structures in the Coachella Valley and high desert have seen their fair share of crazy weather events. Whether it be rapid flash floods, intense wind events that kick up dust and debris, or California’s infamous wildfires, the desert communities never have a dull moment in regards to their climate.

Storms are, by nature (pun fully intended), a little bit unpredictable. They have a tendency to change severity, for better or for worse, seemingly in spite of forecasted behavior. Homeowners in high-risk areas like ravines and valleys learn very quickly to practice preventative measures, like sandbagging and tarping leak-prone roofs. They always hope for the best and often time, things work in their favor and everything turns out just fine. Other times, storm systems that were billed as being minor become more intense and dump rain on communities that were not prepared. This is where bigger issues arise.

In September of 2015, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood and severe thunderstorm warning for residents of Apple Valley, Hesperia, and Victorville. The warning was issued at 6:52 PM and by 7:00 PM, the NWS reported that over an inch of rain had fallen in the hour prior. The storm was capable of producing hail the size of a quarter and a potential wind speed of 60 MPH.  By 7:30 PM, residents were reporting hail the size of nickels. This is not uncommon for a severe thunderstorm. What was uncommon was that this storm occurred mere hours after the temperature had peaked at over 100 degrees. A heat advisory was issued simultaneously alongside the severe weather warning.

Sometimes, the weather will throw you curve balls.

The good news is that as more of these types of severe weather events take place, people become more accustomed to preparing their homes to avoid costly loss expenses.

Business owners and tenants are also heavily affected. Many of the structures in the Coachella Valley have remained unchanged for decades, and building compliance codes of yesteryear were nowhere near as stringent as they are today. That, coupled with the passage of time and normal wear and tear, can lead to some big problems. When a residence floods, people are at risk of losing precious keepsakes and expensive personal belongings to water damage. When a business floods, owners are in a race against the clock. Depending on how much time passes, hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars in equipment and records are at an increasing risk of being destroyed. Productivity and profitability comes to a screeching halt until the issue is resolved.
